The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) would like to congratulate the Victorian Government on the establishment of the Parliamentary Workplace and Integrity Commission.
It would also like to warmly acknowledge the appointment of Mr David Wolf as Chair and Commissioner and Ms Natasha De Silva as sessional Commissioner for the next five years.
VLGA CEO Kathryn Arndt welcomes the establishment of the Commission, aimed at addressing allegations of misconduct by MPs, Ministers, and Parliamentary Secretaries including bullying, harassment, sexual harassment and victimisation.
“The VLGA does not tolerate or condone bullying, harassment or any other form of intimidating behaviour that impacts the ability for an elected representative to serve their communities,” Ms Arndt said.
“We strongly believe civility and respect should be at the heart of public life. We welcome the establishment of a Commission directly tasked with stamping out and addressing misconduct and integrity issues and strengthening the ability of elected representatives to deliver positive outcomes for their communities by creating a safe and collaborative working environment for them to operate in.”
The VLGA and local government sector worked closely with Mr Wolf in his former roles as Deputy Commissioner at the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission (IBAC) and prior to that as Victoria’s first Chief Municipal Inspector.
Ms Natasha de Silva is a former senior executive at the Australian Human Rights Commission, working with the former Sex Discrimination Commissioner, Kate Jenkins, on the Independent Review into Commonwealth Parliamentary Workplaces. She has experience in confidential investigations of misconduct and is recognised nationally and internationally for her expertise in human rights, gender equality, and discrimination.

The VLGA acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Victoria and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners, their elders past, present and future, and to their cultures.
