The Victorian Local Governance Association (VLGA) would like to congratulate The Hon Nick Staikos MP on his recent appointment as Victorian Minister for Local Government.
Minister Staikos’ appointment coincides with the new council term and the recent election of many first-time councillors to the sector.
As a former councillor himself, Mr Staikos has experienced first-hand the challenges facing the local government sector including financial sustainability, cost shifting, service and environmental pressures and the ever-changing needs of communities.
The VLGA looks forward to partnering with Mr Staikos to ensure good governance and effective leadership is at the heart of local government decision making.
The VLGA would also like to acknowledge the significant contributions of outgoing Local Government Minister Melissa Horne who has been in the role since 2022. We thank her for her commitment to driving positive change in the sector, most notably through the recent introduction of new local government governance and integrity reforms, including mandatory induction and ongoing professional development training for councillors.
We wish Minister Horne all the best in her new portfolios and welcome Minister Staikos to the local government portfolio.
.
The VLGA acknowledges the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Victoria and recognises their continuing connection to land, waters and community. We pay our respects to the Traditional Owners, their elders past, present and future, and to their cultures.
