Opposition in Reply – 2019 Federal State Budget

The Opposition Leader Bill Shorten centred his Budget Reply around the Labor Party’s $2.3 billion pledge to expand cancer treatment if elected. Other highlights of the reply included:
 

• Lifting the cap on staffing for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), giving more people access to the scheme.
• Offering greater tax relief for low income earners but did not state support for the Government’s plan for capping the income tax rate at 30% by 2024.
• $1 billion for TAFE and apprenticeships.
• Proposing reforms to negative gearing for investment properties and franking credits to boost government’s income.

With the election expected to be called any day now, there will no doubt be further election commitments by both major political parties. The VLGA aims to bring these announcements to you as they are made, particularly those impacting the local government sector.
