New reforms to the Local Government Act 2020 were finalised today, signifying big changes to how the sector will operate in the next council term. These reforms introduce a Model Code of Conduct and also require mayors, deputy mayors and councillors to undertake mandatory induction training and ongoing professional development.
The VLGA has been a strong advocate for the introduction of reforms, which not only foster good governance but focus on the welfare of councillors working in the sector.
“The ability for CEO’s to determine the professional development needs of their own councillors is a welcome inclusion.”
“Every council and the communities they represent have diverse needs and challenges and it is pivotal the regulations reflect that.”
“It is our belief that these reforms will go some way to fostering a more constructive work environment for Victoria’s councillors and strengthen their ability to support good governance for their local communities. We look forward to supporting them on that journey,” VLGA CEO Kathryn Arndt said.
The changes to the legislation are available here.
