Global Executive Live Panel - The Changing Nature of Elections

With local government elections coming up in October, how will the advancements in technology and the rise of misinformation online impact the democratic process?

Technology aims to simplify our lives, but when it comes to elections and local democracy, do the benefits surpass the risks?

Around the world, administrations, elected officials, and candidates are grappling with the challenge of managing misinformation and disinformation across various platforms, including social media, online news outlets, and mainstream media. This effort extends not only to election campaigns but also to their ongoing tenure in office.

A cornerstone of democracy is the ability to voice opinions and participate in dialogue. Yet, how can we balance 'free speech,' civil discourse, and the protection of staff and officials' reputations and the integrity of local government against the dangers of misinformation?

Hosts Chris Eddy & Kathryn Arndt will be joined by:

  • Sven Bluemmel, Victorian Electoral Commissioner
  • Prof Andrea Carson, Professor Political Communication Journalism, LaTrobe University
  • Ian McCormack, President Strategic Steps Inc, Canada

The panel will explore:

  • The evolving role of technology in elections
  • Managing reputational risks on online platforms
  • Identifying potentially false information
  • The increasing influence of AI in democracy
