Overview
Welcome to VLGA’s 2010 National Year of Women in Local Government (YoWiLG) - taking action to celebrate, build and create change for women and their communities.
VLGA is a silver partner with the YoWiLG campaign. Join us and other peak bodies and local governments by also becoming a partner and finding out about other ways to become involved.
The Year aims to raise awareness and inform the local government sector on the value and contribution of all women employed, elected and involved in local government. All councils are encouraged to get involved. To find out more go to:
VLGA Approach
The VLGA 2010 webpage provides specific information and links on local government policy initiatives for the 2010 YoWiLG as well as stories of successful practices and practical examples of what local governments are doing more broadly. The intention of this webpage is not to publicise one–off events but
encourage information sharing between councils and gathering of ideas
for change.
2010 YoWILG site and Local Government Victoria will have weblinks for
event notification.
This page will be a great way to inspire one another on
ways to take action throughout the year. It is not just about 2010, it
is about the importance of these efforts to create longer term change.
Many local government activities of this nature are able to be claimed as compliance with the
Victorian Human Rights and Responsibilities Charter.

Local governments working for change
VLGA is awaiting responses to its e-survey of members about what their local governments are doing to support the YoWILG and create longer term change so that the needs and hopes of women for themselves, their families and their communities are able to be met.

What else are we doing?
Women in Local Government Coalition
VLGA has provided secretariat support for the Women in Local Government
Coalition (WILGC) since 2000. This non-party political Coalition of 8
key state-wide local government peak, community and philanthropic
organisations, women councillors and individual women was formed in
1996 to work towards the equal participation of women and men in local
governments in Victoria. The Coalition aims to achieve the three
principles of the
Victorian Local Government Women’s Charter, first
created in 1996: gender equity, diversity, and the active citizenship
of women in Victorian local governments.
VLGA Womens Policy Working Group
Gender equality, inviting diversity and supporting the active
citizenship of women form three sides to a triangle creating a local
government political and civic culture which invites women’s
participation.
