VLGA's celebration of 2010 year of Women in Local Government

As part of the VLGA’s celebration of 2010 year of Women in Local Government, we have created several opportunities, including a workshop intensive for women councillors with Dr Amanda Sinclair which was held on 27 May.  Amanda, of the Melbourne School of Business, has taught and researched on the subject of leadership and how it intersects with gender for many years.

Her challenging contentions include that gender, sexuality and power have shaped and limited leadership in business.  Openness and a moderate ego are emerging as critical capabilities, and leadership should be directed towards new purposes of promoting freedom and well-being.

Over 20 councillors, including half from rural and regional Victoria, joined Amanda to enjoy some hours of reflection and learning about an empowering and inclusive approach to leadership in the 21st century.  The VLGA will be exploring how to create other opportunities of this nature for promoting the big idea of doing leadership and politics differently and better, and supporting interested councillors to do so.  It’s part of our work to build good governance.
